Yacht Crew & Captains in Hong Kong: The 2026 Cost & Hiring Guide

Crew & Captain Costs

Finding and retaining reliable crew is a major operational bottleneck. Here are current HK market rates.

Captain
HKD 25k–45k
Part-time: 8k–15k
Deckhand
HKD 15k–25k
Part-time: 5k–10k
Engineer (60ft+)
HKD 30k–50k
Part-time: Project basis

Note: monthly figures above are gross salary. Full-time hires in Hong Kong come with statutory employer costs — MPF contributions, workers’ compensation insurance, paid leave, and Employment Ordinance compliance — typically adding roughly 15–20% on top. A HKD 35k/month captain costs an employer closer to HKD 480k/year all-in, not HKD 420k.

Costly Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Letting an unlicensed person at the helm. Most marine policies are voided if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person. An unlicensed friend during an incident can turn a covered claim into a total personal loss. See our Marine Insurance page for the operator-clause traps.
  2. Over-hiring before you know your usage. Most owners over-hire. A part-time captain costs HKD 8–15k/month vs HKD 25–45k for full-time. Run a part-time or retainer arrangement for a season before committing to permanent crew.
  3. Forgetting employer obligations. Full-time hires in Hong Kong make you an employer. MPF, workers’ compensation insurance, statutory leave, and Employment Ordinance compliance add roughly 15–20% on top of base salary.
  4. Skipping background and reference checks. Crew handle a multi-million HKD asset and your family. A crew agency that doesn’t verify licences, references, and prior employment history is not worth a placement fee.

Four ways to crew your yacht — and which one most owners actually need

Most HK owners over-hire by default. A typical private owner uses the boat 30–50 days a year — far below what justifies a full-time captain. Match the option to your real usage, not to what a Mediterranean magazine looks like.

1. Weekend Owner-Operator
You hold the licence and skipper yourself. Hire a part-time deckhand for busy days. Lowest cost, most hands-on. Suits owners who genuinely enjoy operating the boat.
2. Retainer Service + Part-Time Captain
★ Sweet spot for most HK private owners
A yacht management company looks after the boat day-to-day at the berth — engine starts, bilge checks, storm prep, maintenance coordination — for roughly HKD 10–15k/month. You bring a part-time captain at HKD 1,500/day when you go out. Total annual cost ≈ HKD 165–225k. Half the cost of full-time, with institutional backup if anyone gets sick.
3. Part-Time Captain Only
A licensed captain on call for trips; you handle berth-side care yourself. Suits hands-on owners who don’t want full-time crew but use the boat often.
4. Full-Time Crew
A permanent captain (plus engineer on 60ft+). HKD 480k+/year all-in. Only economic if at least one applies: you’re chartering commercially (20+ paid days/year), you own a 70ft+ vessel that needs daily care regardless of use, you liveaboard, or you want crew-on-standby as a lifestyle choice. For typical private use under 80 hours/year, this works out to HKD 6,000–10,000 per hour aboard.

Note: the retainer-service market in HK is less developed than in the Mediterranean — expect fewer providers, mostly bundled with the larger management firms. We can introduce you to the operators worth your time.

The licence you legally need

In Hong Kong, anyone operating a pleasure vessel must hold a valid Marine Department Certificate of Competency. This applies whether you skipper yourself or employ a captain.

If you skipper yourself
You need the relevant HK Certificate of Competency for the vessel class. Budget 2 to 4 weeks of study and the practical assessment before you can legally take the helm.
If you employ a captain
Verify their licence is current and matches your vessel class. Operating without a properly licensed person at the helm can void your insurance instantly in a claim.
The link to your insurance

This is not just a compliance box. Most marine policies are void if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person. An unlicensed friend at the wheel during an incident can turn a covered claim into a total personal loss. Always confirm whoever is operating holds a valid, current licence.

Why owners come to us for the introduction

The biggest crew mistake is over-hiring. An independent introduction matches crew to how you actually use the boat — and keeps your insurance valid.

Matched to real usage
Most owners over-hire. We help you size crew to how you actually use the boat, then introduce you to agencies for the right part-time or full-time fit.
Buyer-side, no markup
We hold no crew agency and take nothing off placement fees. After the introduction you deal with the agency directly — our fee never raises your cost.
We keep your cover intact
An unlicensed operator can void your insurance instantly. We make sure whoever is at the helm holds the right current licence for your vessel class.

Crew is one of the largest lines in annual operating cost. Run your full ownership numbers to see how part-time vs full-time vs retainer compares against your other costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yacht captain cost in Hong Kong?
A full-time captain runs roughly HKD 25k to 45k per month, or HKD 8k to 15k part-time. A deckhand is HKD 15k to 25k full-time, and an engineer on a 60ft-plus vessel HKD 30k to 50k. Note that full-time hires add roughly 15 to 20 percent on top in employer costs (MPF, insurance, statutory leave).
Do I need a licence to drive my own yacht in Hong Kong?
Yes. Operating a pleasure vessel in Hong Kong requires a valid Marine Department Certificate of Competency for the relevant vessel class. Budget 2 to 4 weeks to study and complete the assessment before taking the helm.
Do I need a full-time captain or just part-time crew?
Most owners over-hire. Weekend owner-operators can skipper themselves with a part-time deckhand. For most HK private owners a retainer service plus a part-time captain is the sweet spot, at roughly HKD 165k to 225k a year. Full-time crew is only economic for heavy use, commercial charter, a 70ft-plus vessel, or liveaboard owners.
What happens to my insurance if an unlicensed person operates the boat?
Your cover can be void. Most marine policies are invalidated if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person, so an unlicensed friend at the helm during an incident can turn a covered claim into a total personal loss. Always confirm the operator holds a valid current licence.
