Winter Yacht Relocation from Hong Kong: The 2026 Owner’s Guide

Winter Relocation

Many owners relocate to Thailand or Malaysia for winter. Smart owners combine this with annual yard maintenance to offset transit costs.

🇭🇰 Stay in HK
HKD 15k–40k / mo
Cool weather (Nov-Mar). High maintenance rates.
🇹🇭 Phuket
HKD 8k–18k / mo
Prime season. Yard rates 30-50% lower. 5-7 days transit.
🇲🇾 Langkawi
HKD 5k–12k / mo
Duty-free zone. Lowest berthing & yard rates.

Relocation Logistics: Sail down with crew (5-7 days) or use ship-on-ship transport (HKD 80k–200k). Sailing down and shipping back is a popular cruising holiday strategy.

When to leave, and when to come back

Timing is everything. Hong Kong’s typhoon season runs roughly June to October; the cool, dry cruising window down south peaks November to March. Most owners who relocate leave in late October and return in April.

Late Oct – Nov
Sail South
After typhoon season, before the northeast monsoon strengthens. Best passage weather.
Dec – Mar
Prime Season
Peak cruising in Thailand and Malaysia. Warm, dry, flat seas.
Apr – May
Return North
Sail or ship back before the next typhoon season begins.

Sail down vs ship-on-ship: the real tradeoff

Sail Down (with crew)
5–7 days
A genuine cruising passage. Costs are fuel plus crew or delivery skipper. Adds engine hours and wear. Many owners treat the trip itself as part of the holiday.
Ship-on-Ship Transport
HKD 80k–200k
The yacht rides on a transport vessel. No passage risk, no added engine hours, no crew time. The premium option, and the safe one for fragile or high-value hulls. Cost scales with vessel size — a 50ft motor yacht typically falls mid-range.
The smart owner’s move

Combine relocation with annual maintenance. Sailing or shipping south positions the yacht near Thai and Malaysian yards where major work costs far less than Hong Kong. A winter refit in Phuket or Langkawi offsets much of the transit cost — you were moving the boat anyway.

Costly Mistakes to Avoid
  1. Skipping insurer notification. Some policies don’t cover offshore passages or require route approval. A claim mid-passage on an un-notified route is a disaster.
  2. Underestimating the boat’s condition. A poorly-maintained vessel shouldn’t make a 5–7 day open-water passage. Get a pre-passage check.
  3. Ignoring the weather window. Between typhoon season and the northeast monsoon, the window is narrow. Late October / November is the standard departure for a reason.

Why owners come to us for the introduction

Relocating south for the winter is part logistics, part timing, part local knowledge of yards and marinas you have never used. An independent introduction takes the guesswork out.

We know the southern marinas
We work with marinas and yards in Phuket and Langkawi, and help you pick the right base for your boat and budget — not just the first name you find online.
Buyer-side, no markup
We hold no marina and take nothing off your berth rate. After the introduction you deal with the marina directly.
Time it with maintenance
We help you line up a winter refit with the relocation, so the trip you were making anyway offsets much of the yard cost.
We handle the paperwork
We help coordinate customs and clearance paperwork on both sides — Hong Kong departure and Thailand/Malaysia arrival — so you don’t get stuck at the dock.

Frequently asked questions

When should I move my yacht south for the winter?
Most owners leave Hong Kong in late October or November, after typhoon season ends, and return in April or May before the next one begins. The prime cruising window in Thailand and Malaysia is December through March.
Is it cheaper to keep my yacht in Thailand or Malaysia over winter?
Yes. Berthing in Phuket runs roughly HKD 8k to 18k per month and Langkawi as low as HKD 5k to 12k, versus HKD 15k to 40k in Hong Kong. Yard rates are also 30 to 50 percent lower, and Langkawi is a duty-free zone.
Should I sail down or use ship-on-ship transport?
Sailing down takes 5 to 7 days and costs fuel plus crew, while adding engine hours. Ship-on-ship transport costs HKD 80k to 200k but adds no wear and carries no passage risk. High-value or fragile hulls usually ship; owners who enjoy cruising often sail one way and ship the other.
Can I combine winter relocation with maintenance?
Yes, and smart owners do. Positioning the yacht near Thai or Malaysian yards for a winter refit means major work costs far less than in Hong Kong, offsetting much of the transit cost since you were moving the boat anyway.
