Winter Yacht Relocation from Hong Kong: The 2026 Owner’s Guide
Each winter, HK owners face a choice: stay in cold, costly Hong Kong, or sail south to Phuket and Langkawi where berthing and yard rates drop sharply. Here is the honest math and the logistics.

Winter Relocation
Many owners relocate to Thailand or Malaysia for winter. Smart owners combine this with annual yard maintenance to offset transit costs.
Relocation Logistics: Sail down with crew (5-7 days) or use ship-on-ship transport (HKD 80k–200k). Sailing down and shipping back is a popular cruising holiday strategy.
When to leave, and when to come back
Timing is everything. Hong Kong’s typhoon season runs roughly June to October; the cool, dry cruising window down south peaks November to March. Most owners who relocate leave in late October and return in April.
Sail down vs ship-on-ship: the real tradeoff
Combine relocation with annual maintenance. Sailing or shipping south positions the yacht near Thai and Malaysian yards where major work costs far less than Hong Kong. A winter refit in Phuket or Langkawi offsets much of the transit cost — you were moving the boat anyway.
- Skipping insurer notification. Some policies don’t cover offshore passages or require route approval. A claim mid-passage on an un-notified route is a disaster.
- Underestimating the boat’s condition. A poorly-maintained vessel shouldn’t make a 5–7 day open-water passage. Get a pre-passage check.
- Ignoring the weather window. Between typhoon season and the northeast monsoon, the window is narrow. Late October / November is the standard departure for a reason.
Why owners come to us for the introduction
Relocating south for the winter is part logistics, part timing, part local knowledge of yards and marinas you have never used. An independent introduction takes the guesswork out.
