Marine Insurance for Hong Kong Yacht Owners: The 2026 Guide
What marine insurance actually costs in Hong Kong, what each policy must cover, and the two mistakes that leave owners exposed in a total loss. Real numbers, honest guidance.

Marine Insurance
Annual premiums typically run 1.0–1.5% of the vessel’s insured value. Here is what HK marine insurance actually costs.
Insurance is one of the largest lines in your annual operating cost. Run your full ownership numbers to see how the premium fits alongside berthing, maintenance, fuel, and crew.
- Underinsuring. Insuring an HKD 8M yacht for HKD 5M to save HKD 20k/year guarantees an HKD 3M gap in a total loss. Insure at replacement value, not a reduced figure.
- The crew clause. Many policies are instantly voided if the vessel is operated by an unlicensed person. Always check the operator clause and confirm any skipper holds a valid Hong Kong certificate of competency.
- Navigation and geographic limits. Most Hong Kong marine policies cover “HK waters only” or “HK + GBA + Macau.” Sailing outside the policy’s geographic limits can void cover entirely. Confirm your limits before any GBA yard trip or winter relocation south.
- Agreed value vs market value. Some policies pay an “agreed value” set at policy inception; others pay depreciated “market value” at claim time. On a 5-year-old yacht the gap can exceed 30% of your insured amount. Confirm which type your policy is, and review the agreed value annually.
What drives your premium
Two identical yachts can carry very different premiums. Underwriters price on risk, and these are the factors that move your rate the most.
High insured value — more exposure for the underwriter.
Inexperienced operator — or no licensed captain.
Typhoon exposure — berth location and storm plan matter.
Charter use — commercial activity raises risk.Commercial charter use isn’t just a higher premium — it usually triggers a different policy category (commercial marine vs private pleasure), often 50–100% more expensive. See our Charter Management page for the full insurance implications of chartering.
Recent survey — a current condition report reassures underwriters. See our Marine Surveyor page for typical survey costs and what underwriters expect.
Licensed, experienced skipper — demonstrably lower risk.
Secure berth — a proper marina with a typhoon plan.
Higher voluntary excess — you carry more, they charge less.
What a proper policy must cover
A cheap policy with gaps is worse than no policy, because it gives false confidence. At minimum, a Hong Kong yacht policy should include:

Insurance is where owners most often overpay or underinsure. An independent introduction means you compare real cover, not one broker’s pitch.
