Common mistakes we see

Leaving registration to the last minute. New setups take 10–14 days. Re-flagging an existing vessel takes longer due to de-registration hurdles. Start early.

Why BVI is the default for Hong Kong owners

For most Hong Kong yacht owners, the British Virgin Islands flag is the pragmatic choice. It is not the cheapest, but it solves the three problems owners actually care about.

Privacy
The vessel is owned through a BVI company, so your name does not sit on a public registry. Ownership stays confidential.
Tax Neutrality
No import duty or VAT trap on the flag itself, and a clean structure for cross-border use across Asian waters.
Liquid Resale
A BVI-flagged vessel held in a company is fast to sell: buyers purchase the company and the asset transfers cleanly.

The trade-off is the annual cost of maintaining the company (roughly HKD 10k to 15k per year on top of the flag), but for a vessel of any real value that cost buys privacy and a far smoother eventual sale.

How to choose your flag

Choose Hong Kong if
You only ever use the vessel in HK waters, you do not need privacy, and you want the cheapest possible setup. The registry is public and the flag is local-use focused.
Choose BVI if
You want privacy, a tax-neutral structure, and an easy future sale. The default for most private owners of any meaningful value.
Choose Cayman if
You own a superyacht and want prestige plus the strongest maritime law and finance/mortgage recognition. The premium option.
Choose Marshall Islands if
You want low cost and minimal admin, especially for commercial or charter use, without the BVI company overhead.

Setups take 10–14 days and re-flagging takes longer. We help you sequence registration so it is never the thing holding up your purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best flag to register a yacht in Hong Kong?
For most private owners, the British Virgin Islands flag is the default. It offers privacy through company ownership, a tax-neutral structure, and liquid resale. Hong Kong registration is cheaper but public and local-use focused; Cayman suits superyachts; Marshall Islands suits low-cost or commercial use.
How much does yacht registration cost?
Hong Kong registration runs roughly HKD 5k to 10k, BVI HKD 15k to 30k, Marshall Islands HKD 10k to 20k, and Cayman HKD 25k to 50k. A BVI company structure adds about HKD 10k to 15k per year on top of the flag.
Why register a yacht through a BVI company?
Holding the vessel in a BVI company keeps your name off the public registry, gives a tax-neutral structure, and makes resale far simpler: the buyer purchases the company and the asset transfers cleanly without re-registration.
How long does yacht registration take?
A new setup typically takes 10 to 14 days. Re-flagging an existing vessel takes longer because the old flag must be de-registered first. Start the process early, well before you plan to use or sell the vessel.
